Already during his studies at the School of Arts and Crafts, Oskar Kokoschka (1886–1980) was given the opportunity to work for the Wiener Werkstätte. At the behest of his professor Carl Otto Czeschka (1878–1960), Kokoschka – along with his fellow student Rudolf Kalvach (1883–1932) – participated from the summer semester of 1907 in the design of artists’ postcards Postcard of the Wiener Werkstätte, which were sold at the Wiener Werkstätte’s salesroom on Graben that had opened in the autumn of 1907. The repertoire of motifs used by Kokoschka comprises fairytale-like figures, grotesque animals and mythical creatures. His depictions are strongly influenced by folk art and are characterized by a naive-childlike style. 16 of Kokoschka’s 22 drafts went into production.
