ONLINECOLLECTION

New Acquisitions

Expansion of the Collection

One of the Leopold Museum’s central tasks continues to be the extension of the collection in order to consolidate collection emphases beyond core holdings. This corresponds to the principle defined by ICOM (International Council of Museums): “Museums have the duty to acquire, preserve and promote their collections as a contribution to safeguarding the natural, cultural and scientific heritage.” Collecting is thus one of the key responsibilities of any museum, either through acquisitions or donations. Our aim is to expand the collection with meaningful new acquisitions which, in keeping with the museum’s founder Rudolf Leopold’s intentions, deepen the understanding for the collection and correspond both to the foundations of the collection and the museum’s exhibition policy. Throughout the past years, the Leopold Collection has grown through several donations that are perfectly aligned with its exhibition policy.
