Sitting in front of as grayish-brown shabby wall is a girl in frontal view. Her body posture shows reserve and reticence, her facial expression, sadness. The area around her eyes is dark and reddened, as if she had just wept. Despite her youth, her skin looks blotchy and unhealthy. Together with Egon Schiele (1890–1918), Franz Wiegele (1887–1944), and Anton Faistauer (1887–1930), the Austrian painter Robin Christian Andersen (1890–1969), who had Danish roots, was one of the co-founders of the Neukunstgruppe (New Art Group) which came out in protest against the conservative teachings of the academy. He was self-taught, modeling his work on the painting of Paul Cézanne (1839–1939), and thus arrived at structured picture composition. With the clear modeling of the figure and the use of cool subdued colors, Andersen accomplished an expressive portrait outside the conventional aesthetic standards of the time.
