Oskar Kokoschka (1886–1980) and the Expressionist writer and poet Walter Hasenclever (1890–1940) met in Dresden, where the artist recovered from his service in World War I and where he would later settle permanently. Despite his initial enthusiasm for the War, Kokoschka eventually became a pacifist and his social life in Dresden played a key role in this development. In his painting Friends dating from 1917/18, the artist painted himself among his Dresden circle of friends and acquaintances including the actress Käthe Richter (1893–1969), Ivar von Lücken (1874–1935), his physician Fritz Neuberger (1877, deported in 1942) and Hasenclever. The graphic portrait was created around the same time and shows the writer with his gaze averted from the observers, in the same calm and pensive pose as in the painting.
