Along with Seated Lady, Her Head Supported on Her Right Hand, this work is one of two studies for the Portrait of Friederike Maria Beer that today form part of the Leopold Collection. Between the first meeting of Friederike Maria Beer and Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) in November 1915 and the completion of the painting in February 1916, the artist created a series of preparatory studies for this portrait. As in the finished painting, the portrayed is depicted standing the present drawing, but while the painting shows her from the front, she was captured in a slight profile in the drawing. The coat-like garment with a fur collar visible in the drawing anticipates the spectacular fur jacket in the painting whose inner lining Klimt liked so much that he asked Friederike Maria Beer to wear it inside out for the portrait sessions.
