Unfortunately not on display at the moment
Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) created first drafts for his 1907/08 painting Hope II (Vision) already in 1904/05. For stylistic reasons, some of these studies, including the work Standing Lovers Embracing, Man with Cape. Study for The Kiss, must be dated back to this early period, even though their motifs resemble the painting more closely than later drafts. The present work on paper, which was created around the same time as the painting, shows a variation of the motif that was not realized in the painted version. We know of at least five comparable drawings of this motif, all of which show the same heavily pregnant model looking directly at the beholder, her hands either crossed behind her back or hanging down. Among them, the work from the Leopold Museum is arguably the most charming and is characterized by a highly original mixed used of red and blue crayon.
