Alice Strobl associated this drawing with the comprehensive group of reclining female nudes which Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) created in connection with the 1906/07 reworked version of his painting Water Snakes II. In this and numerous comparable studies, Klimt positioned the reclining figures strictly parallel to the edges of the depiction, mostly favoring the top half, and covering the entire width of the sheet. Klimt captured the reclining figure situated closer to the beholder, which almost completely covers the nude behind her, with angular, geometrical outlines characteristic of the artist’s style of drawing of those years. The shape of the nude from behind largely corresponds to the rear view of the water snake Klimt realized in the upper left part of the painting in the final version of Water Snakes II. Along with this study, the Leopold Museum owns five further studies for the work Water Snakes II: Study for Water Snakes II, Study for Water Snakes II, Study for Water Snakes II, Study for Water Snakes II and Study for Water Snakes II.
