In 1905, Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) received the commission to design a monumental mosaic frieze for the Palais Stoclet in Brussels. For one of the room’s two longitudinal walls, Klimt created the figure of a dancer, also known as Expectation, along with the motif of the tree of life. Klimt avoided intense dance movements for this figure and instead chose a restrained gesture which the figure carries out in her calm stride and with the expressive movement of her arms. Klimt prepared this figure in numerous pencil studies executed in 1907 and 1908. Two of the around 30 known studies form part of the Leopold Collection – the present drawing and Standing Woman with Raised Right Forearm. Study for the Dancer from Expectation from the Stoclet Frieze. In the present work, Klimt captured the model in a manner close to nature and also rendered details of the hairstyle and fashionable dress.
