Alice Strobl associated this drawing with a comprehensive group of reclining female nudes which Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) created in connection with the 1906/07 reworked version of his painting Water Snakes II. The present work on paper is doubtlessly among the most high-quality studies from this series on account of its extraordinarily high degree of technical perfection. The outlines of the figure, drawn with the highest precision and delicate lines, create the illusion of a porcelain-like smoothness which appears in strong contrast to the dark areas of the pubic hair. Klimt achieved the complex foreshortening of the thighs by means of the outlines alone. Along with this study, the Leopold Museum owns five further studies for the work Water Snakes II: Study for Water Snakes II, Study for Water Snakes II, Study for Water Snakes II, Study for Water Snakes II and Study for Water Snakes II.
