The present drawing is one of 21 known portrait studies for the painting Portrait of Margarethe Constance Lieser which Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) started in 1917 but was unable to finish. The studies were all likely created between April and May 1917 when, according to Klimt’s sketchbook, the portrayed visited the artist’s studio. Some of these studies show the depicted standing, as she also appears in the painted version, while others, including the present study from the Leopold Museum, show her sitting. The manner in which Klimt carefully approached the contours through delicate, broken up lines vividly illustrates the sensitivity of the artist’s strokes in his late drawings. Additionally, the drawing anticipates some of the flower ornaments for the dress’s flower pattern which Klimt did not manage to fully elaborate in the painting.
