This standing female nude is a study for the allegory of Veritas in the Faculty Painting Jurisprudence. Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) started the painting in 1903 and finished it as the last of the three Faculty Paintings in 1907. The figure of Veritas is the one furthest to the left next to the other two allegories of Justitia and Lex, which all appear from a distance in the uppermost part of the Faculty Painting. Veritas’s frontal position is reminiscent of the figure of Nuda Veritas which Klimt rendered for a book illustration published in 1898 in the Secession’s magazine Ver Sacrum and in the eponymous painting completed in 1899. There are some 20 known individual studies for the figure in the Faculty Painting. Seeing as the figure’s feet are covered by a band of clouds in the painting, Klimt dispensed with rendering them already in the studies.
