According to Alice Strobl, Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) created first studies for his 1916/17 painting The Girlfriends II already in early 1915. He continued executing studies for the painting the following year, and some can even be found in the sketchbook Klimt kept during the second half of 1917. According to Strobl, the present drawing, which is one of two studies for the painting The Girlfriends II kept at the Leopold Museum, is part of the earliest series of sketches. Typical hallmarks of these early studies include the emphasis on three-dimensionality through parallel, hatched contours which can be seen particularly clearly in the present work on paper. In this drawing, Klimt highlighted the muscular, ephebic type of woman characteristic of all the studies for The Girlfriends II.
