Unfortunately not on display at the moment
Egon Schiele (1890–1918) left us in no doubt about the identity of the depicted he delineated in vague outlines with closed eyes and in a strict profile, noting “ANTON PESCHKA!” to the left of the motif. Schiele met Anton Peschka (1885–1940) during their studies at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts. Together with several other artists, they left the Academy in 1909 and eventually formed the artists’ association Neukunstgruppe. In 1914, Peschka married Schiele’s younger sister Gertrude (1894–1981), but would never come close to his brother-in-law’s success as an artist.
