Unfortunately not on display at the moment
Even more strongly than his paintings, Egon Schiele’s (1890–1918) graphic oeuvre is characterized by a continuous stylistic transformation progressing in countless nuances from the soft lines of Jugendstil to the sharp edges of the artist’s early works and finally to the sovereignty of his late works. Whether they are executed in pencil or chalk and whether they are colored using gouache or watercolors or not colored at all – his works on paper, of which only very few can be identified as studies for paintings, represent an artistic field in which he displayed an almost somnambulistic certainty in his lines and in the compositional organization of the pictorial space and thus created masterpieces that were highly acclaimed even during his lifetime. Crouching Female Nude shows characteristics that are typical of the year 1914, including the stylization of the face coupled with a cool, sparse and dry coloring of the skin.
