Unfortunately not on display at the moment
In this drawing, Egon Schiele (1890–1918) depicts his friend and student Erich Lederer (1896–1985), six years his junior, seated in an only rudimentarily rendered fauteuil. Only the backrest is executed as a two-dimensional, yellow element, framing the head of the subject, who is portrayed in a three-quarter profile. The tension-filled horizontal format thus evolves from pencil strokes to outlines in yellow ochre to the partially watercolored upper body before culminating in the differentiated coloring of the upper right corner.
The depicted was the son of Serena (1867–1943) and August Lederer (1857–1936), who from 1899 on compiled one of the most remarkable collections of works by Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) and were also friends with the artist. It was Klimt to introduce Schiele to the family in 1912. The latter subsequently received commissions for portraits and was invited to stay with the Lederers at their family residence in Győr. The artist and Erich Lederer, who was greatly interested in art, became close friends. In 1915, it was Schiele who mediated the sale of Klimt’s Beethoven Frieze by Carl Reininghaus to the Lederers.
