Additional text according to Settlement, April 2016:
« The textile merchant Karl Mayländer (born in Vienna in 1872, murdered by the National Socialists in Łódź) was an art lover and collector of works by young Austrian artists. He was involved in adult education at the Volksheim Ottakring. There he met Etelka Hofmann, to whom he gave works by Egon Schiele before his deportation. Prof. Leopold acquired this drawing from Etelka Hofmann and contributed it to the Leopold Museum-Privatstiftung in 1994. Since the work is undoubtedly the property of the Leopold Museum-Privatstiftung, but Karl Mayländer gave it to his friend Etelka Hofmann in the course of the National Socialist penetration, this process was judged as a seizure and the work was not restituted, it was an important concern of the Leopold Museum to find a common solution in the sense of a fair and just procedure with the legal successors after Karl Mayländer. In the course of this solution, two Egon Schiele works, also from the Karl Mayländer Collection, were transferred to the legal successors, namely Selbstdarstellung mit gestreiften Ärmelschonern (1915) and Sitzender Bub mit gefalteten Händen (1910). »
