Anton Romako (1832–1889), who had moved to Rome in 1856, managed within two decades to establish himself in Italy as a portraitist and genre painter, and to acquire wealth and renown. This period was also one of his most productive. The painting Road near Paestum Basilica shows a lone rider, accompanied by his faithful dog, on a road that leads through a campanian landscape, the monumental basilica of Paestum rising up in the background. The spectrum of colors chosen by Romako and the delicately placed brushstrokes serve to emphasize the scene’s idyllic character. The composition recalls the architectural capricci popular with travelers in the 18th century.
