This photograph, taken on 15th September 1890, shows the Schiele family without the father. Marie Schiele (1862–1935) is sitting in the center of the photograph, holding Egon (1890–1918), who was merely three months old at the time, on her lap. On either side of her, we see Egon’s siblings; to the left, his eldest sister Elvira (1883–1893), and to the right Melanie (1886–1974). The two girls are wearing matching outfits complete with a beret. Little Egon is clad in a christening robe – perhaps his birth was the occasion for this photograph, which was likely taken at the Tulln studio of the photographer Josef Müller. At the same studio, another picture of the Schiele family was taken two years later, this time in the presence of the father Adolf (1850–1905), see Adolf and Marie Schiele with Egon, Melanie and Elvira.
