Lake Walchensee in Bavaria was a central motif in the late work of German painter Lovis Corinth (1858–1925). In this painting, the artist depicts the lakeside Fischer Hotel from a top-down view. The hotel is situated in the little Alpine village of Urfeld on Lake Walchensee in Upper Bavaria, where Corinth and his wife Charlotte Berend-Corinth (1880–1967) found, from 1919, a quiet retreat from the big-city life of Berlin. The rural scenery with a laundry line and grazing cows in the foreground look idyllic. Shining from behind the building lies the silvery lake. The backdrop of the darkling Alpine range with its subdued colors gives a sense pf the time shortly after sunset. The slanted perspective with its diagonally applied brushstrokes brings visual vibrancy to the composition.
