In late June 1913, Egon Schiele (1890–1918) was invited to Altmünster on the Traunsee lake by his friend and patron Arthur Roessler (1877–1955). Schiele, who arrived via Munich, spent two weeks in the beautiful Salzkammergut region from 16th July. Schiele was greatly impressed by the lake and the mountain ranges reflecting in the water. Together with Roessler, he went on many excursions, for instance to Schloss Ort(h) – a popular landmark in Gmunden – which Schiele like very much. The palace is located on a small island on the lake and is connected to the shore by a 120-meter-long wooden bridge. The photo shows Schiele (to the left) and Roessler standing on this bridge; the building and its characteristic tower can be seen in the background.
