In this oil study, Emil Jakob Schindler (1842–1892) depicted the view from a hill over the expanse of the landscape surrounding Karlsbad (now Karlovy Vary) in present-day Czechia. The landscape on the horizon in the center of the depiction is bathed in sunlight; to the left, we can divine Dalovice/Dallwitz Castle. This castle, built in the 19th century, was surrounded by a forest which was later remodeled into a castle grounds in the style of an English landscape garden. Schindler oftenmostly preferred close-up, intimate landscape depictions featuring unassuming motifs. A, as such, this painting is rather unusual for his oeuvre. The subtle conveying, beyond the optical reality, of the weather conditions and atmosphere, however, is much in keeping with the notionideas of Austrian Atmospheric Impressionism.
