A field road lined with poplars leads into the depth of the picture space in the work of Emil Jakob Schindler (1842–1892). The emphasis on the ruts in the lane shows the artist’s preoccupation with the everyday, which, along with the valuation of the sketchy, is one of the characteristics of Austrian Atmospheric Impressionism. In the warm, diffuse light of the autumnal evening, both trees and fields appear in reddish tones. Cutting against the street, painted in pink and orange shades, as counterdiagonals are the silver-gray shadows of the slender poplars that form vertical axes. The artist painted the Boulevard of Poplars near Plankenberg on repeated occasions in different weather and moods of light. He found this motif around Plankenstein Castle near Neulengbach, Lower Austria, where he spent the summers from the mid-1880s and founded a private school of painting, often attended by women who were denied access to the state Academy.
