In his painting Small Mountain Town in Dalmatia, Emil Jakob Schindler (1842–1892) depicts a southern, hilly landscape defined by loosely clustered houses and a church picturesquely perched on a mountainside. A path in the foreground leads the viewer’s eye into the depth of the composition. Avoiding narrative elements Schindler creates a quiet, contemplative atmosphere. The work thrives by the interplay of light and atmosphere and reflects Schindler’s turn to plein air painting—as well as his quest for a painterly dialogue between nature and architecture in the spirit of the Atmospheric Impressionism. The painting was produced during a journey to Dalmatia and Corfu commissioned by Crown Prince Rudolf (1858–1889).
