The painter, graphic artist and designer Carl Otto Czeschka (1878–1960) created the title page for the first playbill of the performance venue Cabaret Fledermaus, planned by Josef Hoffmann (1870–1956), for the Wiener Werkstätte in 1907. Czeschka studied at the Vienna Academy under Christian Griepenkerl (1839–1916) from 1894 to 1898, and from 1902 to 1904 taught at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts. In 1907 he left Vienna for a professorship at the School of Arts and Crafts in Hamburg. The colorful title page shows the lettering “Fledermaus” at the top and “Kabarett” at the bottom, while the artist monogrammed his work in black slightly to the right of the depiction’s center with his initials “COC”. The design is characterized by decorative elements, including crosses and spirals, interpreted by Czeschka in keeping with Jugendstil.
