Among the central motifs in the oeuvre of Eugen Jettel (1845–1901) are rural idylls. In his 1885 work Garden with Sunflowers the horizontal composition conveys a sense of summery tranquility and peacefulness. The foreground is dominated by soaring sunflowers and red geraniums rendered in trenchant colors, with a farmstead under a pale blue sky visible in the background. Though Eugen Jettel spent 20 years of his productive period in France, he is considered one of the most important Austrian Atmospheric Impressionists. Rather than joining the French Impressionist movement, Jettel, who is often dubbed the quiet poet, always remained faithful to a lyrical-realistic notion of landscape.
