In the winter of 1892, Theodor von Hörmann (1840–1895) traveled to Dachau, to paint in Weßling near Lake Ammer. The rural idyll of Dachau – a popular motif with plein-air painters – inspired the artist to intensify his nature studies and to focus especially on winter depictions: The work Peasant Children in the Wintry Beech Forest shows two children carrying baskets and making their way through the fallen snow. His landscape depictions, which were invariably composed from nature, are characterized by a pastose paint application and radical colors which often resonated with critics. Hörmann’s investigations of what he saw illustrate his struggle for a new perception and for a disassociation from existing painterly norms.
