Carl Moll (1861–1945) specialized in landscapes and interiors. Inspired by his teacher Emil Jakob Schindler (1842–1892), his early works show his own variant of Impressionism characterized by an open manner of painting and a fragmentation of colors. The artist found many of his motifs in the city of Vienna and its environs. Moll further created beguiling flower still lifes oriented on French still life painting, as espoused by Édouard Manet (1832–1883), among others. For this work, the artist placed several English roses into a square glass. They appear slightly wilted but have retained their delicate pink hue. The mirroring table surface reflects the glass, while a fallen petal hints at the transience of all things beautiful.
