Currently on display at OG4
The first landscape created in a square format, this painting occupies a key role in Gustav Klimt’s (1862–1918) oeuvre. He painted it in 1899 in Eglsee during a summer sojourn he enjoyed with the Flöge family in Golling near Hallein in Salzburg. The delicate light green tones of the shoreline and the bluish-pink reflections of light on the water surface herald Klimt’s penchant for pastel colors broken with white, and for nuanced, muted secondary colors which would become so characteristic for his palette after 1900.
