In her painting Apple Blossoms, Tina Blau-Lang (1845–1916) depicted a small branch with pink and white blossoms protruding into the center of the painting from the left. The background, hinted at with few brushstrokes, shows three horizontal stripes of different colors rendering indefinable motifs. With its decorative effect and planar tendency, the work betrays influences of Japanese art which started to emerge towards the end of the 19th century. The painting, created after 1894, appears like a flower still life – a genre that experienced a great upsurge with artists during the late 19th century. Blau-Lang taught landscape, still life and flower painting at the Ladies’ Academy of the Munich Association of Women Artists founded in 1884. From 1898 to 1915 she headed the class for landscapes and still lifes at the Viennese Art School for Women and Girls established in 1897.
