This early work by Oskar Kokoschka (1886–1980) was likely created while he was still a student at the School of Arts and Crafts in Vienna, and can be considered his first attempt at oil painting. The composition shows a nude young girl leaning against a wall and looking at the beholder. The spectrum of colors used here alternates between numerous shades of brown. The work does not yet betray any elements of Kokoschka’s characteristic style of painting, which would make the artist one of Austria’s most famous painters.
