In this work on paper, Karl Hubbuch (1891–1979) captured the body of a standing female with soft lines using pencil and watercolors. Slightly turned away from the beholder, the woman is clutching a cloth draped around her body. The engaged leg and free leg rendered in a slight twist, the hips and head thrust a little forwards, she is securing her right upper arm with her left hand. The second hand rests in front of her pubic area which is covered by the fabric. Her brunette hair is falling in loose waves onto her shoulders. Hubbuch’s oeuvre contains a large number of female depictions. These are often exaggerated, with a focus on whimsical, ambivalent and inscrutable elements. This graphic work captivates on account of its beautiful lines and the artist’s intent to create a representational depiction.
