Marie Schiele (1862–1935), née Soukup, hailed from the south-Bohemian town of Český Krumlov/Krumau and came from a wealthy family. In 1879, she got married to Adolf Schiele (1850–1904); the couple had four children, with Egon Schiele being their only son. Schiele, who had enrolled as a student at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts in 1906 at the age of only 16, depicted his widowed mother in profile in this early portrait. Marie Schiele’s gaze gives the portraits its special liveliness: From the corner of her eye, she is peering at the son drawing her.
As the extant correspondences show, the relationship between mother and son was not free of tensions. After Egon Schiele had died from the Spanish flu in 1918, only days after his wife Edith, his estate went to his mother. In this way, the portrait came into her possession eleven years after its creation.
