In the autumn/winter of 1924/25, Herbert Boeckl (1894–1966) worked at the Vienna studio of fellow Carinthian painter Felix Esterl (1894–1931), while his family stayed in Carinthia. At Praterstraße 34, he created a number of important paintings including the Nude in Front of Yellow Box as well as the Still Life with Stovepipe. These two works are connected by their warm coloring in shades of red, but also by specific props, such as the jug positioned on the stove. With its stately size of 72.5 x 92 centimeters, Boeckl’s still life differs greatly from his earlier fruit still lifes in both its formal concept and its splendor. The striking jug with the bouquet of flowers gives the composition an elegant air, while the eggs and the half-filled wine glass recall motifs of still lifes dating from the same period. The conspicuously bent stovepipe, which does not appear in any of Boeckl’s other works, may have triggered the composition by serving as an echo of the vase.
