Throughout the six-year run of the magazine Ver Sacrum, Koloman Moser (1868–1918) created around 140 contributions – from initials to covers – and had a greater impact on the design of the publication than any other artist. This portrait study, executed in pencil, ink and India ink on paper, is a draft for Moser’s *Cover Design of the First Founders’ Portfolio of Ver Sacrum; the final print decorated the cover of the founders’ issue and was published in the 4th issue of Ver Sacrum in 1899. Like the later version, this draft also shows Moser’s preference for long, curved lines. While the face of the allegorical female head remained largely unchanged, the execution as a stencil print led to alterations in the artistic design of the hair.
