The numerous portraits created by Oskar Kokoschka (1886–1980) are characteristic for his oeuvre. His talent for capturing the emotional depths of a person on canvas earned him the sobriquet “ripper of souls”, while his contemporaries went as far as attesting him X-ray vision. In his later years, Kokoschka oriented himself on a brighter and bolder color palette, but never lost his ability to grasp the individual character of his models. The work The Lace Maker is representative of Kokoschka’s works painted in the 1930s. The swiftly placed, distinctive brushstrokes, which invest the depicted’s arms and the background with a sketch-like appearance, serve to emphasize the elaborately rendered facial features. Owing to the voluminous forms and impasto painting, The Lace Maker exudes a sense of monumental calm.
