Gustav Klimt’s (1862–1918) early work, dating from his time as a student at the School of Arts and Crafts, includes four known similar nude depictions – of three male models and one female model. The present painting is of great importance because it was dated by Klimt himself and thus serves as a point of reference for further chronological assignments. The work was created during the time when Klimt concluded his studies and formed the Künstler-Compagnie with his brother Ernst Klimt (1864–1892) and Franz Matsch (1861–1942), opening their own studio and executing wall and ceiling decorations in a Historicist style.
