The collaboration between Koloman Moser (1868-1918) with the fabric manufacturer Johann Backhausen & Sons began shortly before the turn of the century and culminated between 1898 and 1904 with the creation of 50 designs. Dess. 3734, the so called “Forellenreigen” [Trout dance], was initially woven in two color combinations and subsequently in five. The pattern illustrates Moser’s engagement with the Japanese design language which inspired him profoundly, as well as his attempt to decorate any surface. Moser’s artistic tendencies can be regarded as harbingers of the endeavor that began with the foundation of the Wiener Werkstätte in 1903 to unite all areas of life on a creative level. In 1901 “Forellenreigen” was gifted to guests of the City of Vienna’s Ball.
