In 1908, Oskar Kokoschka (1886–1980) accepted Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) and Josef Hoffmann’s (1870–1956) invitation to design the poster for the Kunstschau held that year. While the young artist still oriented himself on his role model Klimt, Kokoschka’s manner of depiction appears much more radical: the elongated limbs could almost be described as Mannerist. The angular outlines, large color planes and the writing matching this style, however, were still typical for Viennese poster art, which an entire room was dedicated to in the exhibition. Whether the girl is indeed picking cotton or vine leaves is subject to some debate. Kokoschka’s fellow student at the School of Arts and Crafts, Rudolf Kalvach (1883–1932), also designed a poster for the Kunstschau which shows some stylistic parallels to Kokoschka’s work Poster for the exhibition 1908 Kunstschau.
