The Austrian artist Theodor von Hörmann (1840–1895), who studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts, lived in Paris from 1886 to 1890. While in the French metropolis, Hörmann intensively explored the prevalent art movements and would later become Austria’s only Impressionist painter. The work Flower Market at La Madeleine IV was created shortly before Hörmann’s departure from France and shows the market square in front of the Église de la Madeleine. The artist executed several studies and larger paintings of this motif, though the paintings realized later in the studio differ greatly from the studies created on site: While Hörmann explored the relationship between structure and color in his painterly executions, the studies convey a delicately painted impression of market life.
