In this early work, the painter Richard Gerstl (1883–1908) depicts his childhood friend Waldemar Unger (1881–1938). The portrait shows the aspiring lawyer in representative clothing: a black jacket and tie and a shirt with a high white collar folded back at the corners. The composition and the position of the depicted follow the tradition of 19th century bust portraits with a neutral background. In addition to academic elements, however, the work already betrays pictorial innovations which are owed to Gerstl’s exploration of Impressionist painting: In loose brushstrokes, the artist defines white highlights on the forehead and below the eyes. These emphasize the bright complexion in front of the brownish gray background. Furthermore, the personal likeness of the depicted is enclosed in a bright, fine aura. His youthful charisma, coupled with a serious facial expression and a self-confident gaze, conveys clarity and ambition.
