The restructuring and interior decoration of the Villa Friedmann in Hinterbrühl was the first major private commission undertaken by the young architect Joseph Maria Olbrich (1867–1908). The industrialist Friedmann tasked Olbrich with the artistic realignment of his villa, which had been in the process of being built from April 1898 based on designs by Ludwig Schöne (1845–1935). Olbrich got involved with the villa’s exterior by simplifying the facades and dispensing with parts of the late-Historicist decorations. The design of the villa’s interior decoration, which has been handed down in historical photographs, was created entirely by him. The furnishings included this armchair which was used in the Villa Friedmann’s children’s and guest room. The style of the villa’s furniture was considered defining in Vienna. As work on the building was completed in April 1899, it is possible to date this design to the autumn/winter of 1898/99.
