During his time as a professor at the Dresden Academy, Oskar Kokoschka (1886–1980) created the 1923 colored chalk lithograph *Self-Portrait from Two Sides as a Painter *. The depiction is strongly reminiscent of Cubist forms of expression and of early works created by the artist in 1910 for the magazine Der Sturm. Kokoschka chose this self-portrait as the poster for his solo exhibition held in the autumn of 1923 at the Zurich art salon Wolfsberg. Under the emerging National Socialist regime, Kokoschka’s works were defamed as “degenerate”, destroyed and displayed in the propaganda exhibition Degenerate Art. Along with rabble-rousing texts, the accompanying catalogue featured three works by the artist, including this self-portrait.
