Oskar Kokoschka (1886–1980) chose a self-portrait to advertise his lecture entitled On the Awareness of Faces, which took place on 26th January 1912 at the Association for Literature and Music: Self-Portrait, Hand on Chest. The same motif was used as a poster subject for Herwarth Walden’s (1878–1941) magazine Der Sturm and reflects the artist’s understanding of himself as an ecce homo or Man of Sorrows: Stigmatized as a “chief wildling”, he felt rejected by the Viennese public. Kokoschka’s statements uttered during the lecture caused renewed outrage and reinforced his scandalous reputation, which eventually led to his dismissal from the secondary school for girls on Franziskanerplatz, where he had taught drawing from 1911.
