This portrait of 24-year-old Adolf Schiele (1851–1905) in profile was photographed by Georg Wassmuth, whose “Photographic Atelier” was located at Zirkusgasse 50 in Vienna’s 2nd District. Adolf’s brother-in-law Leopold Czihaczek (1842–1929) lived with Adolf’s sister Marie Leopoldine at Zirkusgasse 47, where Adolf’s son Egon Schiele (1890–1918) also stayed temporarily from 1906, the year he took up his studies at the Vienna Academy.
The bust portrait of Adolf Schiele shows a balanced facial profile partly hidden by a full beard. The narrow felt hat with decorations gives a distinctive and dignified air to the portrait.
