Dear madam.
Thank you very much for your kind letter! You must not be mad at Egon [Schiele] because you are not hearing from him at all. – He is going through a very hard time, – the poor dear. – It is a disaster that Egon has had to go to Prague! Because the Czechs
have behaved so decently during the War they are now being treated accordingly, – like animals, that is, and unfortunately Egon is among many Czechs. I have cried many tears because of it – seeing all of this, – I am right now unable to think about it clearly and calmly, – I am all churned up inside. – My greatest worry is whether the dog’s life
(Pardon the expression.) that Egon is leading now – might not make him sick, God, – that would be too awful! – They are staying in barns, in this bad weather, it is almost life-threatening. – Egon needs to pull out all the stops – to escape from here, he has already written to Mr. [Anton] Peschka about what to do, – he has not had an answer yet, I hope it will reach him before it is too late. – Dear mother, – may I call you that?
I would certainly like to, – and I want to ask you something else, could you call me by my first name – may I do the same? – last names are so formal, – and we want to become quite close, – we are a family now, after all; – I will be a good and loyal daughter to you, – an obedient, doting wife to your son and stand by him in good times and in bad.
I am sending my kindest regards to Mrs. [Gertrude] Peschka, – unfortunately I have not had a chance to meet Miss Melanie [Schiele] yet, – but I am sending best regards to her as well, while I am forever kissing your hands only my dearest Mrs. Schiele, yours
Edith
