Letter from Egon Schiele to Carl Reininghaus
Spring 1911
(Tulln 1890–1918 Vienna)
(Graz 1857–1929 Vienna)
Translation of the Transcription:
Dear Karl Reininghaus, today I heard from a reliable source upsetting news that [Erwin] Osen shared with you negative remarks and letters about me. It is regrettable! – Although I often wrote to you and hoped you would visit me, like last year, I was never to receive a response on the matter. I know I have more than enough enemies, one says one thing, the other does another, and I know Osen has always been antagonistic towards me in artistic terms. – Yet, it was impossible for me to believe that this very same poor individual O. [Osen], whom I more or less supported in my difficult years or at least fostered, and since January 1910 have been the one who made possible his possibilities, assisted him wherever I could, and let him stay with me for the entire summer etc., that he would dare to callously humiliate me everywhere.
That is what I wanted to tell you. – Now, visit me to see me as I really am, not demanding money and having helped many people. – Though I never expect any thanks, especially not from O., and find his personality, his character and his venomous lies rotten, completely rotten. – I want you to visit me not because I am willful.
Best regards,
Egon Schiele
