For the apartment of architect, designer and art collector Wolko Gartenberg (1884–1950), the architect, designer and graphic artist Dagobert Peche (1887–1923) designed, among other objects, this carved-wood and gilded candelabra in 1920/21. The piece is characterized by a free play with classicist furniture motifs on the one hand and geometricized vegetal elements on the other: The central square column, for example, is designed as an inverted obelisk, as in Louis-seize, with partial fluting. It stands on a square pedestal, which, like the four feet supporting it, is again decorated with fluting. In addition, the pedestal and the column are ornamented with grape motifs. The making of this opulent candelabra for the Wiener Werkstätte was undertaken by the trained sculptor Friedrich Nerold (*1877).
