The exhibition Art in the Life of the Child was designed as a traveling exhibition by the German Book Trade Association and was presented in Dresden, Munich, Nuremberg, Stuttgart and Berlin before it was brought to Vienna in collaboration with the Hagenbund in 1902. The exhibition focused on the artistic design of picture books, wall decorations for children’s rooms and classrooms, new concepts for drawing lessons as well as the topic of dolls. Joseph Urban (1872–1933), one of the most important founding members of the artists’ association Hagenbund, chose the latter for his design of the catalogue, thus reflecting the theme of the aesthetic education of children.
