Painted around 1890, the Landscape with House in Ruins shows the unique and unmistakable painting style of Robert Russ (1847–1922) of his creative phase around 1900. The shapes of the landscape dissolve into dots and spots, covering the picture surface in pointillist manner like a carpet. The resultant impression is that of a diversely structured surface. The painting is characterized by a cool and light colors. Particularly remarkable are the violet shadows, which are in complementary contrast to the delicate yellow of the rocks. The only element in the picture with clear outlines appears to be the ruined house in the center. With this unspectacular motif, enlivened by sketchy staffage figures, Russ lines up with the Austrian Atmospheric Impressionists. However, lyrical pictorial conception remained foreign to the artist; rather, it is the reality of color and light that informs his work.
