This etching speaks to the fascination that the landscape of Worpswede in the north-German Teufelsmoor region held for the artist Fritz Overbekck (1869—1909). In his composition, he makes skillful use of the melancholy-evoking evening hour that already ushers in the darkness of night. The representation is particularly characterized by an attentive sense for detail; one can almost feel the whistling wind. For his etchings, the plates of which were destroyed decades after his death in the bomb raids of World War II, he also added cigar ash to the acidic etchant needed in the process.
